An 18-year-old male patient suffers from hair
loss since he was 15 years old. Click on the following link to see what you can
do about it.
Feeling sad and depressed is a normal part of
the hair loss process. Statistically speaking you are not alone. In fact,
approximately 25% of men under the age of 25 suffer from genetic hair loss.
Sometimes you can feel as if you are alone and the only person who suffers from
this condition, but that could not be further from the truth. There is no
perfect age or time to receive a hair transplant. However, the vast majority of
surgeons require that their patients be at least 25 years old before undergoing
a hair transplant procedure. That said, there are exceptions to the rule and
nothing is written in stone.
Dr Usman Amiruddin is here to provide his
patients with safe, effective surgical and non-surgical treatments for all
areas of the body. I am a Certified Plastic Surgeon and medical aesthetics who
focus on building the relationship with each patient while helping them to
understand the procedure process. I provide all cosmetic, plastic & burn
services under one umbrella.
The main focus should be to stop the progression
of hair loss. Unfortunately, androgenic alopecia (genetic hair loss) is a
progressive condition that progressively worsens over time. Surgical hair
restoration does not prevent, delay or treat hereditary hair loss, simply move
pre-existing hair to another location. Therefore, you should try to contain
your hair loss by trying Propecia (finasteride) and Rogaine (monoxide). Both
medications have been approved by the FDA and have been proven to work.
Some people have been able to stop the
progression of their hair loss through taking medications for hair loss and
some have even regrown. You must wait at least 12 months after taking the
medication before considering a hair transplant procedure. The results may be
enough to delay surgery for a few years. Unfortunately, at the age of 18, you
have just started your journey through hair loss. There are no guarantees with
hair transplant surgery, but there is a guarantee that your hair loss will
progress, especially at the age of 18. Therefore, it is imperative that you try
to prevent further hair loss by using medications for hair loss.
In addition, younger patients tend to have
unrealistic expectations because they want to restore their hair to match their
partners. While it is understandable to want your teenager to have hair again,
it is not a realistic expectation. That said, exceptions have been made and
highly respected hair transplant surgeons have performed surgeries on patients
under 25 years of age. However, most of these patients have been taking
preventive medications for hair loss.
